Our Year in Work

By on 11th Jan

The busiest January ever means that only now are we stopping to take a breather, for reflection on our achievements in 2018. As well as experimenting with a 4-day working week for the team in August, building relationships with new collaborators and welcoming two new people to the team, we also spent the year with our sleeves rolled up on some great projects.

Fancy a nosey? We've picked just a few examples of the work delivered by the team this year - so whether you're looking for a new website, a print campaign, a well researched rebrand, or a start-to-finish integrated marketing strategy, we've got you covered...

Helping TROVE smash £10,000 of Kickstarter funding in 2 hours!

Alongside our on-going support with the TROVE Shopify website and complete management of their social channels (Instagram, Facebook & Twitter), Makermet designed and managed the run up to and all live elements of their wildly successful Kickstarter campaign.

TROVE were adding the Cash Wrap to their low-waste inspired range of wallets and accessories, and an initial goal of £10k of pre-order sales was reached in just 115 minutes! Overall the campaign finished up 800% funded - a whopping £80,000 pre-sales boost for the new product.

Big thanks to LeftLion Extended for their work on the eye-catching campaign video - and to Matt for lending us the tandem!

Creating a sense of place in Nottingham's Creative Quarter

March 2018 saw the launch of our brand new website for the CQ, and The Big House business support programme. Insights from our exploration workshop with the CQ team, combined with those from a public focus group, helped us deliver a website experience for anyone living, working, learning or investing in Nottingham's creative and digital sector.

Post-launch, our new partnership gave us time to develop street signage, the CQ NOW newsletter, printed materials and wayfinders dotted all over the city centre.

We also designed and delivered another highly flexible CraftCMS-based website for the Sneinton Market Avenues development, which updates itself (!!) to reduce cost of ownership. Event and news feeds of relevant content from the CQ website automatically populate the CMS, and clever integration with social media channels imports live updates from Twitter as resident traders and businesses interact with the brand online.

4 All the UK - Designing Nottingham's bid to Channel 4

It was an honour to be part of the team submitting Nottingham's bid for the city to house either the TV station's headquarters or creative hubs. We took up a creative direction and design role for the development of the pitch and presentation that the Invest in Nottingham team delivered to Channel 4, which joined just 13 shortlisted cities in the UK.

Representing Nottingham to Global Investors at MIPIM Conference 2018

Makermet were commissioned to produce a ‘Welcome to Nottingham’ brochure highlighting the success of specific industrial sectors, including infographics of key stats and location information. Nottingham's representatives gave a presentation at last year's event in Cannes, via a slide deck designed by Makermet. A short documentary video introduced key sites for development in the city and brief interviews with Directors and CEOs of some of Nottingham’s largest and most successful companies including Alliance Boots and Experian.

Launching Nottingham's first ever sustainable city guide

Continuing the close relationship between Pebble Magazine and Makermet, we designed and built the Pebble Guide web app, which helps users explore the sustainable businesses thriving in three major UK cities. Encouraged by title sponsorship from herbal tea brand Pukka, more locations are due to launch in 2019.

Leading the rebrand & relaunch of one of Newcastle's most beautiful city centre venues

Makermet we're commissioned to deliver a rebrand for the Union Rooms bar and restaurant venue, opposite Newcastle's central railway station. As well as launching a new website and producing all digital and print collateral for the brand, we worked with the interior design team during the £1.5m refurbishment project of the historic city centre venue, and Cyclone Leisure group's director and group marketing manager on the launch strategy.

Onwards to 2019. A note from our director...

As researchers, strategists, designers, web developers, marketeers and straight-up fans of Nottingham, much of 2018 was gladly spent flying the flag for our city and shouting about all that makes us proud to call it home. These success stories have proven that decisions we made to grow the team at Makermet, develop our processes and present ourselves as a brand consultancy and digital marketing agency, were an important step to supporting clients from the development of an idea to launch day of their product, campaign or businesses, and beyond.

2019's stage is being set. Our work with low-waste, ethical and sustainable businesses is booming. Projects in fashion, cosmetics and renewable energy are off the starting blocks already, and of course our work with pebblemag.com continues as it becomes established as the umbrella brand for everything green. We're also looking forward to developing a new focus on tourism, construction and place branding, and continuing our support of complicated projects tackling social, charitable and ethical challenges. The team is growing again to guarantee our availability. Our new website is shaping up.

Economic challenges are set to be a theme in 2019 of course, and the impact of changes we face will be felt by every person and business in the UK. Businesses who took full advantage of EU funding to get off the ground or grow (ourselves included) may be feeling particularly dispirited, but it's extremely encouraging to see how it has inspired creative, business and local communities to share their problems and consequently the skills, experience and support needed to solve them.

I hope you'll be part of our story in 2019,

Alex Traska, Makermet
